Milk kinship in Southern Europe: Breaking conceptual borders between reproduction (blood and genes) and nutrition (human milk)

Based on the premise that, in Islam, through the flow of human milk among two babies not biologically connected, a milk relative can be constructed, and drawing on recent ethnographic work done in Barcelona on milk banks and human milk donation to Muslim babies within the context of transnational migration, the aim of this presentation is to give new theoretical anthropological insights into the role of human milk (as food and as a biological bodily fluid) in the construction of a particular type of kinship, known as milk kinship, in Southern Europe.
